SHIRLEY'S STORY

Shirley Ann Addington Crandall
1950 - 2022
My story begins on January 11, 1950 in Lamar, Colorado. I was the oldest of six children born to Jerry and Myrtle Addington.I grew up on a farm with my siblings, and oh, there were good times and crazy times! So many memories. Turtles big enough for my brother Bob to ride! The cows that escaped the fencing in the early mornings. And being the eldest, I got to take the first bath before all the other brothers and sisters!
I met Ron and Linda Crandall at a church function in Louisville, Colorado. The Addingtons and Crandalls became friends first and then family. I married Ron in August 1968. Linda and I were great pals and she accompanied us on many of our adventures. She even went with us on our honeymoon!
We settled in Toltec, Arizona, and after three years of marriage, we started a family. My firstborn, Angie, was born in July 1971. It’s not fun being pregnant during the summer in Arizona!
My second daughter, Heather, came along in November 1975. My sister Nancy was with me in the hospital and we gave up Thanksgiving Day for Heather!
Then, in February 1982, Wade, my only son, was born. We rejoiced because he was promised to me by the Lord.
As my children grew, we took them on many trips. These trips turned into adventures, where, as usual, our vehicles and/or trailers would break down. There are so many stories of towing trailers with Ron’s junk to and from Iowa. But, almost every year, I got to see my side of the family.
In these early years, we attended Apostolic Tabernacle and made friends that lasted the rest of our lives. Martha has been my friend for the longest time. We had parties, bake sales, taught Sunday school, and attended church together. We had good times making peanut brittle with elder Sister Combs and Sister Sally.
Later, we attended First United Pentecostal Church in Eloy. And there, I met more lifelong friends, such as Bonnie and Donna, who worked with me at Umphred’s. Many good times at each other’s houses and working with the youth. Then there’s Eloisa and the “Sisters“. Good times in Bible studies. Church banquets and food! All of these ladies were my friends and they were treasured!
In 2007, we moved to Iowa after Ron retired. I was with my mom and most of my siblings, once again. I had such a good time yard-saling with Nancy. She and I laughed a lot and reminisced about our growing up years. It was so much fun.
I enjoyed our Thursday double date nights with my brother, Jerry, and sister-in-law, Lisa. Our favorite place to go was Smokey Row, a little café that had the best drinks and food. I loved that chai tea!
After eight years of missing my kids and grandkids, we moved back to Arizona in 2015. My first stroke took place that December. My health was never the same after that. But I still had the strength to go to church and worship the Lord. He was still good to me.
Once we got back to Arizona, we started attending Life Church in Gilbert, where I met my newest friend, Pam. I sure enjoyed the dinners and game nights. It was really nice seeing Christmas lights with them during the Christmas season.
Now that we were back in Arizona, I wanted to spend as much time with my family as I could. We tried to get together for as many holidays and celebrations as schedules allowed. I enjoyed the trips to the Happy Jack cabin. Surrounded by pine trees made me happy. And watching my family come together filled my heart with joy.
Throughout the years, I’ve had hobbies and collections. These have made my days a little more interesting. I enjoyed getting up in the morning to feed “my” wild birds in our backyard. I got to watch Doves, sparrows, blackbirds, and even quail. I also enjoyed watering my plants and cacti, both indoors and out. I found joy and painting in making “pet” rocks for my family. I am an artist unlike any other!
I have a large collection of colored glass bottles and oil lamps that I love to share with others. I have even more piggy banks and piggy statues that I’m quite fond of. And they all reside in my bedroom!
And before I knew it, I had lived my life. The good times, the bad. I’ll miss being “Honey“ to Ron. I’ll miss my kids and grandbabies. (Who aren’t babies anymore!) I’ll miss being in their corner and rooting for them. Know I loved you all, family and friends – old and new. But, I’m looking forward to being with my parents, my brother Bob, and especially, with my Jesus!

P.S. When you look for me in Gloryland, I’ll be in my cabin. And in the meantime, enjoy the suckers and gum I didn’t get to finish!
